Ferret Supplies 101

Ferret supplies are divided into the necessities like a good cage, good quality food and litter tray, toys and bedding and luxuries like treats, collars, supplements, or a variety of entertaining cage trappings. If your ferret will spend time in his cage during the day, these may well become necessities to avoid your pet becoming bored.

Basic ferret supplies that you need include:

* Ferret Food

* Food dish that can't be knocked over

* Water dish that can't be knocked over

* Litter trays

* Litter

* Bedding (never use wood shavings)

* A good size cage

* Bathing products (soap-free where possible)

* Claw clippers designed for ferrets

* A variety of toys (cat toys are a good choice)

* Linatone or Ferretone vitamin supplements

* Bedding box or basket

* You may choose to include a harness or leash among your ferret supplies

One of the most important ferret supplies are ferret toys - at least as far as your pet is concerned! This is because ferrets are very lively and active animals that become bored very easily. They are super-intelligent creatures and toys provide the stimulation they need to avoid boredom or even depression.

You can choose your toys from the local pet store. Cat and kitten toys are an excellent option for most ferrets. Make sure that your ferret can't hurt itself by avoiding any toys that can break apart or those that contain foam stuffing. All ferret supplies including their toys should have one thing in common - safety!

Since ferrets tend to be harder on toys than cats choose sturdy toys and avoid sponge and 'superballs' which can easily be chewed into pieces and swallowed. Squeaky toys are ok but only if they can't be chewed. What about ferret supplies you can make yourself?

If you can't afford expensive toys and other ferret supplies why not make your own? Ferrets love playing in home-made hammocks. You can make one by using a piece of cloth and some eyelets (metal ones) and an old pants leg can make a great hideaway. Umbrellas, bathrobe belts, tennis balls, golf balls, ping-pong balls, film canisters and old socks are good toys for ferrets. They also enjoy cardboard boxes. Plastic dryer hoses can be made into toys. They will enjoy crawling through the tube.

No matter what your choice of ferret supplies and toys your ferret is likely to make his pick from - you guessed it - your household and personal items. Hide your keys!
