Ferret Information on State Laws

Looking for ferret information on state laws? What is a FFZ or 'ferret-free zone'? Ferret free zones are areas where ferrets are illegal or banned. There are states in which it is illegal to keep a ferret unless you have a license or permit. There are many reasons why these animals may be banned. Obtaining the proper ferret information on state laws will help you to know if it is possible to keep ferrets where you live.

Generally, all ferrets (including the domesticated variety) are seen as wild animals. They are also seen to be at risk for spreading rabies and for escaping and forming feral packs. Accurate ferret information from the experts has not been sufficient to dispel these myths.

According to those in the know, many of these reasons are invalid. Arguments for keeping ferrets in captivity are usually based on the availability of rabies vaccines, the ferret's inability to survive outdoors, and the domesticity of the ferret. Still, you need to abide by the rules of the state where you live if you want to avoid having your ferret removed and being saddled with a fine. Citing valid ferret information is unlikely to change the minds of the authorities or the law!

Ferret Information on Licenses and Legality

Which rules apply to you all depends on where you live. In your state, ferrets may not be subject to any laws, may need a license or permit or be illegal. These kinds of laws may be different by state, province, county, or city. It is best to try to find out accurate ferret information on whether you can keep ferrets in your region before you buy one.

How can you find out which rules apply to you? By calling your local Wildlife Department or Fish and Game Department, the humane society, or veterinarian you will be able to get the appropriate ferret information on state, regional or county laws.

Do bear in mind that even if a pet store in your region has Ferrets for Sale it does not mean that they are not illegal. The pet store may be ignoring the ferret information provided by the authorities.

In the United States, ferrets are illegal in Washington, D.C., Dallas, Texas, California and Hawaii. In New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Illinois you will need a permit to keep your ferret. Cities and towns may have individual ferret laws. You may also need to ask your landlord if he is happy with your pet. Providing some accurate ferret information may win him or her over.

You may be tempted to keep a ferret even if all the ferret information you have uncovered tells you it isn't allowed. Please don't do it. You may need to constantly hide your pet away, won't be able to take it out with you. and may find it hard to obtain medical care for your pet. If you go away and need somebody to house or care for your pet they may refuse based on the laws in your state. Keeping ferrets illegally may seem like fun, but in the long run it isn't fair on your pet!
