How to Find Reputable Ferret Breeders

Looking for reputable ferret breeders? Breeding ferrets is both difficult and expensive. Many breeders go out of business or end up selling their ferrets to animal laboratories or selling ferret products. Since ferret breeders may also be unscrupulous and irresponsible with their ferrets it is a good idea to learn how to spot a good breeder and a healthy ferret.

How to Recognize Good Ferret Breeders

* You breeder should be licensed and registered, if this is required in the state where you live. If you ask to see proof of their permission to breed and sell ferrets they should happily provide it. Ferret breeders who sell ferrets illegally are doing the breed more harm than good.

* Ferret breeders should offer only healthy, vaccinated animals. Ferrets are prone to many diseases for example canine distemper, human flu, aleutian disease, rabies, and others. Your ferret should be in good health and have a vaccination record. Ask your breeder if any other animals are ill in the immediate surrounds.

* Good ferret breeders will ask you questions to find out if you know how to care for your pet. They will also provide you with information on feeding, health care, training, neutering, or spaying and the anatomy of your ferret.

* Most good ferret breeders neuter all their animals to prevent bad breeding practices from being perpetuated. Female ferrets will stay in heat until they are mated and this could lead to the death of the ferret from bone marrow depletion. So a good breeder would never sell you an un-spayed female.

* If you are thinking about breeding with your ferrets your ferret breeders should ask you to provide proof of your skills and abilities to do so and to provide any applicable licenses. A good breeder will never sell un-neutered animals to irresponsible breeders.

* You should also be questioned on whether your home is properly set up for your new ferret. Do you have a cage and play area for your pet? Is your home 'ferret-proofed'? Responsible ferret breeders will show concern for both the animal and your family.

* So how can you tell if your ferret breeders have healthy animals on sale? The most important things to look for are its general physical health and personality. Choose animals that are friendly and avoid animals that seem very nervous or shy.

* Ferret breeders should be able to point out the good health of the animal. In general its eyes should be bright and alert. Its fur and skin should also be in good condition with no missing patches. Notice whether the ferret is breathing well and is free from any mucus in the nose.

It is in your best interests and those of your new furry friend to get your ferret from responsible, reputable ferret breeders only. Do the breed a good turn and get your pet from a trustworthy source.
